Hi, I’m Tom Vetter, a Bozeman, Montana based outdoorsman and freelance writer. I grew up in New Jersey where I explored the nearby woods and waters and developed a love for the outdoors at a young age. After graduating college in Pennsylvania a friend and I road tripped to Oregon, where we backpacked in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area, explored the rugged coast around Coos Bay, and enjoyed our first microbrews. I knew then that I would end up out west and a year later landed in Gardiner, Montana, tending bar at night and hiking and fishing in and around Yellowstone Park during the day.
After two summers in Alaska, I settled in Big Sky, MT. While there I explored the myriad lakes and streams of Yellowstone Park, often backpacking to remote destinations in search of wild trout. The national forests in southwest Montana gave me the opportunity to hunt deer, elk and upland birds, and one lucky year, to successfully fill a Mountain Goat tag in the rugged Spanish Peaks. I was a fly-fishing guide for ten years, taking clients to the Gallatin, Madison and numerous smaller streams in addition to the storied waters of Yellowstone Park.
My love of travel took me to the Bahamas and Belize, as well as Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Utah and Idaho in search of anything that would chase my fly. Some of my most memorable adventures include an extensive sea kayaking trip to British Columbia and Alaska, and a ten-day kayaking trip to the 10,000 Islands area on the gulf coast of Florida. Back on dry land, I backpacked extensively in Utah, Oregon, North Carolina, and hiked sections of the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey, New York, and Georgia.
